ROZ’S STORY
Roz is a 14-year-old Syrian refugee whose family fled to Iraq during the war when she was a baby. She has lived in a camp her whole life.
When the Free to Run team knocked on her family's door asking if anyone was interested in running, Roz registered herself. Her family supported her. The community did not.
"I faced judgment and unpleasant comments when running publicly or even walking on the street," she says. Like many girls in conservative contexts, running outside - being visible, being active in public space - wasn't welcomed.
But eventually it became part of her daily life.
"At first, running long distances was difficult," Roz says. "But running became my passion."
